The Story Behind the Story
As an infant, Daphne was diagnosed with periventricular leukomalacia, or PVL, a brain injury associated with cerebral palsy. Her journey at C. S. Mott Children’s Hospital has included a selective dorsal rhizotomy at age three and a baclofen pump at 17 to manage spasticity. These two surgeries are referenced in the book when the sunflower’s roots are trimmed and when a special medicine ball is place in the sunflower’s stem.
Through these experiences, Daphne has learned that every child with cerebral palsy is unique— and that all children deserve to be included, supported, and celebrated.

Daphne and Phoebe Matthews were born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and their story began with extraordinary medical care and extraordinary family strength. Daphne's path with cerebral palsy continued to shape her world, while both sisters grew into adults who now share their story through words and art.
